It was the Summer of Two queer, Black dancers traveled to Portland, Maine and invited me to be a part of a collaborative dance project called This is Formation: Intervention.

Maine's oldest gay neighborhood bar, located in the historic West End of Portland, Maine. This bar features a leather-&-Levis slant, serving cocktails from a classic wood bar since Strong drinks, pool, and host of occasional drag shows and other events.

"I said I can't do this anymore." Despite the often dark history of Portland's gay bar scene, they became critical to LGBTQ+ activism in the state. "We've forgotten just how DIY it was in the early days," Megan MacGregor with the LGBTQ+ Collection at the University of Southern Maine said.

It seems that under a decade ago, the LGBTQ community had several bars to call their own in Portland, Maine, but is now down to two. That would be Blackstone's, Portland's oldest gay bar, and a newer establishment, Cocktail Mary.
